Background

The Mount Rainier Climbing Incidents Map began as the final project for Geography 575, Animated and Web-based Maps at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the spring semester of 2008. Both professor Dr. Mark Harrower and TA Zachary Johnson encouraged students Sarah Bell Ferrare, Bert Spaan, Adam Hill and Andreas Stueve to spend the summer of 2008 refining the map. With immense support from Mount Rainier's Chief Climbing Ranger and Search & Rescue Coordinator Mike Gauthier the team of students had the opportunity to take the map further. A very special thanks to Mike Gauthier and the National Park Service at Mount Rainier National Park, without whom this map would not be possible.

The map was created by cartographers, computer scientists, and climbers. It's purpose is to educate future mountaineers of Mount Rainier, and other high country pursuits; it is not meant to be used as a climbing or hiking guide.

This map was produced with deep respect for those who have lost their lives on Mount Rainier.
